Numerical Weather Prediction Scientist

Reports to: VP, Forecasting Services and R&D

Location: Andover, MA

Description: Weather Services International (WSI) is seeking one or more highly-qualified, energetic scientists at either the associate and/or senior level to join our Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) team.  The incumbent(s) will be part of a team of scientists, software and hardware engineers working to develop, implement and operate NWP models, and to create end-user solutions from the data produced by those models.  The candidate(s) must be versed in current research on NWP and its effective use, and will be expected to contribute to the advancement of the science in the community in general and WSI’s capabilities in particular.  The candidate(s) will be expected to participate in scientific conferences, symposia and related forums. The incumbent(s) will also represent WSI with clients and customers on occasion.

Skills/Competencies Required:

  • M.S. in the Atmospheric Sciences or closely related field.
  • Broad knowledge of numerical weather prediction, including experience with state-of-the-art forecasting models and modern initialization techniques (e.g. 3/4D-Var and EnKF). 
  • Established record of research, development and/or use of modern numerical weather predication models and their initialization techniques.
  • Knowledge and experience with applications of NWP such as MOS and other value-added post-processing.
  • Working proficiency in programming using at least one technical computer language.
  • Ability to work effectively in a rapid-paced, goal-oriented corporate environment.
  • Eagerness to advance meteorological, software and hardware technologies.
  • Willingness to provide off hour support of operational NWP systems on occasion.
  • Willingness to be a key member in a team working environment.
  • Ability to travel on occasion, including occasional international travel.
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills in English. 

Additional Senior Level Skills/Competencies Required:

  • Ph.D. in the Atmospheric Sciences or closely related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Ability to conceive, develop and articulate R&D plans to technical staff, and expected outcomes and benefits to non-technical parties.
  • Deep knowledge of NWP and its initialization techniques.
  • Experience in managing and leading technical development teams.
  • Experience designing, implementing and operating complex software systems.

Salary Information:                                                                                  
Compensation will range from $70,000 to $130,000 depending on education and experience and in turn position level chosen.  A complete benefits portfolio is included and relocation assistance is available.
