A recognized leader in aviation education, Purdue
University's Department of Aviation Technology uses
WSI Pilotbrief for student training and pre-flight briefings.
Purdue University Department of Aviation Technology
operates a fleet of New Piper Aircraft Warriors, Arrows,
and Seminoles in addition to two Raytheon Super King
Airs, a Beechjet 400A, Frasca Flight Training Devices,
and two full motion B-727 simulators. "We have
been faithful customers of WSI for many years,"
says Dr. Thomas Carney, Department Head of Aviation
Technology. "The WSI Pilotbrief system provides
Purdue with an excellent resource for our briefing and
aviation meteorology training needs." Purdue utilizes
the WSI Pilotbrief system with Premium Radar.
Purdue University has a rich aviation history dating
back to before 1930 when it became the first university
to own and operate an airport. Purdue was one of the
first academic institutions to offer collegiate credit
for flight training. Amelia Earhart served as a career
counselor for female students and Purdue Research Foundation
facilitated the purchase of the Lockheed 10 Electra
flying laboratory she used on her final flight. Additionally,
Purdue University has graduated more astronauts (22)
than any other non-military institution.
Predecessors of the Department of Aviation Technology
operated a charter service and airline utilizing DC-3,
DC-6, and DC-9 aircraft. A two-year degree program in
Aviation Maintenance was initiated in 1954. By 1964,
an ab-initio flight-training program had been developed
and a BS degree program was offered in Flight Operations.
In 1977, a BS degree program was added for aviation
maintenance students and in the mid-1980s the school
developed the Aviation Administration program. Purdue
also contributed to the development of Crew Resource
Management and continues to be a leader in aviation
human factors studies.
The Purdue flight-training program is unique in providing
Professional Flight majors
with hands-on knowledge of
turbine operations through
the use of simulators and
flight experience in the program's
King Airs. Ten students are
competitively selected on
a yearly basis to be rated
in the University's Beechjet
and serve as copilot. Purdue
has a number of industry partnerships
with major and regional airlines
and corporate operators providing
varied internship and co-operative
educational opportunities.
WSI is proud to count Purdue
University's innovative Department
of Aviation Technology as
a loyal customer.
