As a technical person, and owner of Northern Avionics,
it's conservative to say that I was very anxious and
chomping at the bit, looking for an excuse to try out
the WSI InFlight weather system and products. I only
needed some place to go. Well, it just so happened that
our son was on his way home to Norfolk, VA after being
stationed for 5 1/2 months on board the USS Roosevelt
as an FA18 Hornet mechanic. What better opportunity
than to fly out to welcome our son home, and take in
the return of our serving Naval Battle Groups.
My route would take me through WI, into IL, across to
southern OH, into WVA, then to Chesapeake, VA and the
Norfolk area. A beautiful VFR morning departure enroute
for Dekalb, IL awaited, then I was on to Parkersburg,
WV.
Well so much for CAVU: Enroute to Parkersburg the afternoon
temps began to rise and so did the formation of the
"CB's". Ok! WSI, now is where you earn your
right to remain in my aircraft, let alone prove you're
worthy of being recommended to my customers.
With a few pushes of the MX-20 buttons, I was enlightened
to the fact that Northeast and South of my route there
was weather that I did not want to fly through. A quick
call to Flight Watch confirmed my WSI picture, and my
route was adjusted accordingly. Checking back and forth
between METARs and WSI NOWrad, I was able to complete
the second leg of my flight into PKB. The weather was
such, that without the WSI product, I may have proceeded
onward, but with much stress and constant contact with
Flight Watch. With WSI on board, I routed my flight
around the weather and was able to complete this leg
in comfort and relaxed piece of mind. I always knew
where the weather was; ahead and to my sides.
After an evening of rest, I was off to Norfolk. Ceilings
were very low. Sky cover was very thick, with rain showers
moving from one area into another. This would be the
real test for Mr. WSI. Without WSI InFlight on board,
I would NOT have completed this leg of my trip. The
system performed up to, and beyond expectations; and
the situational awareness provided by these technologies
is second to none; unbelievable until you've tried them.
The interface between WSI InFlight and the MX-20 is
a much-needed product/technology and general aviation
navigation tool.
So if you're in need of state-of-the-art avionics,
take a look at the WSI InFlight system tied into the
Garmin-AT MX-20, and give me a call. I will be more
than happy to demonstrate this excellent pair of situational
awareness tools.
