Billerica, MA and Miami, FL. - February 10, 2003 - WSI
Corporation today announced that it will expand its expertise
in delivering real-time weather information to the marine
market with the debut of a revolutionary new service at the
Miami International Boat Show. Based on the same technology
WSI currently provides to U.S. general aviation, WSI AtSeaÔ
will provide mariners with continuously updated marine weather
graphics and text right to their existing chartplotters and
electronic charting software while underway.
"WSI AtSea will elevate a boaters ability to make better
educated decisions based on the weather," said Reed Wilbur,
Product Manager of WSI's Marine Group. Until now, boaters
have had very limited access to real-time weather information
once they departed the dock. "Instead of listening and
waiting for a weather report or relying on an outdated one,
WSI AtSea enables you to see it live as it happens at your
current location and along the route to your destination".
The WSI AtSea system uses an advanced satellite broadcast
technology specifically designed to deliver critical data
in real-time to where mariners need it most - onboard their
boat. After installation of a WSI receiver and antenna, boaters
can receive a continuous stream of marine weather information
that is automatically updated with no need for "downloading"
static files or waiting for a local report. Service offerings
will include full-color animated weather radar, buoy reports,
sea-state conditions, coastal and offshore forecasts, advisories
and warnings, storm tracking and sea-surface temperatures.
"WSI is committed to raising the level of critical weather
information delivery", said Lynne Wilson, Executive Vice
President of WSI's Aviation and Marine business group. "We
realize that the need for relevant, up-to-the minute weather
information does not end when a boater leaves the dock or
when a pilot takes to the air." WSI is currently providing
a live weather service to the cockpits of general aviation
aircraft using the same technology concept under the brand
name WSI InFlight.
WSI AtSea receiver and antenna packages will be available
this Spring through WSI authorized marine electronic dealers.
Annual or seasonal "unlimited usage" subscription
packages will be made available online via wsi.com for a flat-rate
fee. Compatible systems and pricing will be announced shortly.
